Anybody can do it?Let’s just get this out in the open right now:  Not everyone can use this great tool and achieve the desired results.  Above and beyond that – misusing this powerful tool can actually do damage to you, your business, and your reputation.

Having said that:

  • You don’t need a degree in human psychology to post a status to your FaceBook page.
  • You need not have a post-graduate degree in literature to write a four-hundred word blog about your favorite fishing hole.
  • There is nothing to say that it takes a brilliant person to re-tweet that link you enjoyed.
  • Posting a short video of your best customer bragging about you and your company can be done without a studio or production team.

We get all that.

We also understand that people have different DNA.   You may love to write.  It’s also possible that you can’t stand writing but you have fun with video.  Maybe you don’t like writing OR video – let’s say that you are the person who enjoys doing a podcast – an audio file.  We all have different DNA when it comes to what we like to do and what we excel at doing.

What is your DNA?

So let’s look at social media from a business standpoint and visualize the options with regards as to who might maintain your internet presence:

  • You.  The business owner. This is the most logical choice and makes the most sense.  However we find that the biggest problem here is – you guessed it – TIME.  They just don’t have time.
  • An Employee. Sounds like a logical choice, and it could very well be – but do you have someone with that kind of time who also has the technical knowledge as well as the intangibles it takes to deliver content that will result in a successful campaign?  Some companies do – most don’t.
  • Brother-in-Law. Yes – we have the family members and friends who all have great intentions – without going into detail – let’s just go ahead and say that the drawbacks to this option are so many we don’t have room here to discuss them.  This option can be catastrophic.
  • Professionals. There are companies out there who are professionals when it comes to handling social media, monitoring your reputation online, and writing articles and blogs.  If you have the budget this is by far the most appealing option.

So the moral to this little story is that just putting a warm body behind your social media – engaging customers and prospects with an amateur – well – this might not be the best situation for most business owners.  It’s something to think about.  You spend years building a brand and a reputation – it can be severely damaged very quickly with today’s technology.
