Jobs and Social Media
You know – we tend to take up most of our time and energy discussing and analyzing how social media impacts small business, how we can use social media to develop new business, and how our competitors are using social media. These are all very popular (and rightly so) topics and indeed they need to be addressed.
There are other topics related to social media that need to be looked at – one of them is particularly timely – how to hunt for a job using social media.
Let me preface this by saying that I’m not a human resources expert and some of my ideas might be a little outside the box. Here are some of those ideas:
1) Start building your network immediately. I don’t mean play around with it – I mean – get with the program. You should be able to add dozens of new contacts on LinkedIn, FaceBook, Twitter, and MySpace very, very quickly. Have a social media campaign in place as if you were the CEO of a company that sells one thing: you.
2) Don’t look for a job. Look for people. Companies don’t hire people – people do. Find the right person. In order to find the right person see item one above.
3) Monitor companies and people that are relevant to your search. Use the tools available out there for alerts and monitoring. If you don’t know what those tools are – ask.
4) Are you familiar with the law of attraction and how it applies to sales? If not – get familiar with it. Use it. Attract people to you.
5) Speaking of sales – read lots of articles and blogs about sales strategies. I know – I don’t care if you are a ditch digger looking for a job – learn how to sell. You are selling yourself.
6) Use video. Create a YouTube channel and use it.
7) Explore Blog Talk Radio. Don’t spend too much time here – but don’t discount it either.
8 ) Post to your blog at least daily. I don’t care if you don’t want to. If you are unemployed you should be able to do this with absolutely no problem at all. Again – if you need help – ask.
These are just a few ideas – you also can use the more traditional and conventional means of looking for a job – I’m just not sure as to how effective those are here in 2010. I would love to read some comments on this blog post – fire away.

hey I like the post. Found this from doing a google search. Ive been looking for this sort of thing for a while. This info will come in handy to me. I will check back soon to search the rest of your blog. thanks
These are good tips for people already familiar with social media.
However, for someone new to it, there will be a learning curve involved. It may be better for that person to start off following fewer people on Twitter, for example. If they commit a few newbie faux pas while getting the hang of it, they haven’t annoyed hundreds of potential followers – just a few (hopefully understanding) friends.
The same goes for YouTube, etc. I feel that for social media to be an effective tool for job hunting (or anything, really), it must be used well. And using it well takes some learning and some practice.
