Are We Too Connected?I hear this a lot lately.  “…we’re just too connected these days…”.  I sorta get the point but at the same time – that ‘s almost like saying “…we just have TOO much money…”.  There are some things you can never get enough of and here are three of them:

Time – Don’t we all need a little more?
Money – It can save your life – it can end your life.
Information – Manage it – don’t let it manage you.

We all love having plenty of time – but the reality is that if we don’t manage our time wisely it can have a very negative impact on our lives.  Who doesn’t want more money?  Money can be as good or as evil as you allow it – you gotta stay on top of the greenbacks and make them behave.  Information – can we ever really have too much?  We can allow ourselves to be overloaded with useless information or we can manage the information that comes in to us in such a way that it enhances our lives rather than consume it.

The access to information gives us a massive amount of power over our lives – whether it be for the sake of convenience, safety, business, or any other number of reasons – having information at our fingertips puts us in a generation unlike any that has come before us.  Websites, GPS tracking, Email, Social Media, Wireless communications, Laptops, Smart phones…all of this makes it possible for each of us to be a few clicks away from virtually any piece of information in the World.  Scary?  Not really.  It’s phenomenal.  It’s exciting.

Some people are afraid of information – scared to death of change – and hold on to the past for fear of the unknown.  Others – like me – we welcome innovation.  We don’t look very hard to the past – we are looking forward.  We crave technology and we discipline ourselves to learn how to use it effectively – contributing to a more eventful and exciting day to day existence.  Are there concerns?  Of course there are.  Everything from the fear of ID Theft and privacy issues to wondering which blog is reliable and accurate.  So what?  It’s here and it’s moving fast…with or without us.

Get connected.  Get connected big time.  Be fearless.

My wife and I were sitting on the couch this afternoon with the TV going in the background – we were both transfixed on our iPhones for a few minutes before we realized something…it hasn’t been that long ago that couples would sit on the couch reading the newspaper – a VERY limited and outdated amount of information that really enhanced nothing.  Today – we’re sitting on that same couch crunching thru more information in a few minutes than our parents did in weeks or months.  We’re more informed.  We’re more educated.  We’re less ignorant.  Most of us can hold a conversation on just about any subject or topic someone might throw at us – we’re connected – if we don’t know it – we can find it out in a few seconds or minutes.

Go get that smart phone.  Sign up for that Twitter account.  Start that FaceBook Fan Page.  Buy you a Bluetooth device.  Setup that other email account.  Connect all of it – start enjoying the easy access that we have…don’t squander it away by being fearful.  Go for it.
