Marketers are eager to find clever new ways to engage consumers online with branded content and interactive advertising that is good enough to make people want to share it with their network of friends. Consider Burger King‘s ( BKC – news - people ) “Subservient Chicken,” who has been taking commands on the Web since the guy in the chicken suit was introduced in 2004.

For one, don’t expect to throw something up against the wall social media wise and expect great returns. You will notice that all of these folks had an objective which prompted a plan. They then went about executing. So a strategy is important. Do you know what your overall social marketing strategy is?
You can compete with either the big box stores or anyone else if you are willing to put the effort into it.
If you want results and don’t have the time, energy or creativeness, hire someone to do it. You hire out other tasks, you can do the same here. If you hire the 16 year old whiz kid on computers working in the back room, they may know a computer, but not understand the nuances of a true social media marketing campaign.
Believe it or not, not doing social media right can actually harm your business.
