Social Media for most of us need not be very complicated. It’s n0t rocket science and we should stop worrying about all of the buzzwords, cute phrases, and catchy slogans – let’s spend time making this phenomenon work for us.
Here are 3 wasted worries about social media:
1) The way our site looks. I know – I’ll really catch it from some of the branding and marketing folks out there – but that’s ok – I’m a big boy. If you think for a second that the way your Twitter background looks is having an impact on how social media works for you —- well —- I have a sneaky suspicion that you might make your living from doing Twitter backgrounds.
2) Worrying too much about our competitors. If you are concerned because your number one competitor has 35 more FaceBook Fans than you do – you don’t have a strategy. You need one.
3) Wondering this: Is someone going to say something bad about me or my company? Let’s just go ahead and put this one to rest —- YES. They will. If you do business with people someone will be the unhappy camper and chances are they may make a little post on FaceBook or fire off a nasty Tweet. Rather than worry – relish the opportunity this brings.

So quit worrying. If you someday want to have that fancy super duper Twitter background – by all means – go for it. If you want to have a little competition within yourself to beat the competitor with fans and followers – that’s allowed too. But don’t worry about it. I don’t even know what my Twitter background looks like – and I do this for a living. Our competitors are notorious for buying fans and followers – I’m not concerned about that – we have a sound strategy to work with that isn’t dictated by those folks. We have had tons of compliments directed at us online – not much negative – but I fully understand that someday we’ll get that. Whether we drop the ball on a project or just plain make someone mad, we are big enough to confront it and move on.
Chill out. Be yourself. Engage people and enjoy the results.

Dudes, first this an interesting look at things, and you are not alone in this. Lost track of how many times I’ve had to smooth over with a client that there will be a lot of negative chatter. It’s just part of the game.
Short and true article dudes. Thanks!
It is very easy to worry what someone will think of you. That is human nature but we have to put that behind us when we are promoting ourselves and our company.
Dennis,
I couldn’t agree more, especially about the chasing fans or worrying about if you get a bad comment on your fan page. One of the keys in Social Media is engaging and learning from your existing customers, what could be better than the opportunity to fix a problem that you may not have been aware of. The word “Marketing” in Social Media Marketing can be a bit deceiving, yes you can increase business, but it is also about customer service and retention.
Thanks,
Scott
Thanks for the comments…
Dennis, You didn’t just hit it solid, this was grand slam time!
It is the type of talk that I would like to see more so called “social media guru’s” espouse. We have numbers and really don’t focus on them. We focus on solid strategies that help the Dudes achieve their objectives. One of your best posts ever!!!
