Adapt or DieThis is a short blog – but it makes a very important point.

I’ve written extensively about this and I’ll probably continue to harp on it – we’re seeing companies bite the dust – one after another – that we’ve personally approached about helping them with their internet strategy – but “…they really don’t need that.”

They don’t?

Just this past couple of weeks I’ve sat here and watched three of these businesses close their doors.  Was it the economy?  I don’t think so.  These people refused to adapt.  They continued to run their businesses like it was 1975.  No website.  No blog.  No social media strategy.  No online advertising.  They were spending their money on newspaper advertising, Yellow Pages, direct mail, and all of the other forms of traditional and conventional ineffective advertising.  Why?  I couldn’t tell you.

I can however tell you the next three that will be gone…next time you see me just ask.

You know, just because there is a technology, strategy, or process that you yourself don’t totally understand – that doesn’t mean you can just ignore it and hope it goes away.  Let’s take a look at this short list of excuses that we hear every now and then:

  • I don’t have a blog because I don’t like to write.
  • I don’t use FourSquare or Yelp because I just don’t understand those things.
  • My website is fine – even though it was last updated in 1998.
  • I can’t see how FaceBook can help my  business – that’s crazy.
  • Twitter?  What’s that?
  • I know – I don’t come up high in Google – but – people know who I am and where I’m at.

Then – there are times when we hear these things:

  • You know – we really do need an updated blog.  We have a ton of information for people.
  • Not sure about these new things – FourSquare and Yelp – but I need to find someone to help me understand where we can fit in.
  • I’ve heard we need a WordPress site – what is that and how can it help us?
  • We need to leverage social media – FaceBook and Twitter are not going away.  What do we need to do next?
  • Can you help us with our search engine rankings – what can we do?

Some people adapt.  Some people don’t.  It’s your choice.

I’d love to hear your take on this – fire off a comment below and let me know what you think.

One Response to “Another One Bites The Dust – Ignore The Internet and Social Media at Your Own Peril”

  • Hi Dennis,

Recently I conducted a very unscientific query via LinkedIn.

I posed the question: “What’s the 1st thing you think of when you hear the phrase ‘social media?’”

You would not believe the answers I received.

I wrote about it in a blog post on SocialMedia.com… here’s the link: http://socialmediatoday.com/steve-olenski/149909/find-social-media-sand-insert-head
