There are billions of web pages. I doubt we’re very far off from having trillions. Here in northeast Georgia – our little local area – there are millions and millions of web pages. It’s not very difficult to get lost in a crowd that big.
So what’s a business owner to do?
First off – and I know I’ll catch total hell for this – I don’t recommend SEO. At least don’t pay for it. It’s a bottomless money pit that is becoming more and more irrelevant as each day passes. There are companies out there who have made their millions from this scam and the door is about to close. Don’t be one of the victims.
There are however a few methods that you can use to really drive some targeted traffic to your website – by targeted traffic – my definition is “someone who might actually become a customer…”. Anyone can get big numbers – you can buy that. But if you have a coffee shop in Dawsonville – what good is it if someone from Phoenix AZ visits your website? Ok – you get the picture. We want people who could become paying customers visiting our website.
So how do we do that…free?
1) Make sure that your website is printed on everything that you print. EVERYTHING.
2) Create a FaceBook Fan Page. Make sure you have a link on the Fan Page back to your website. Add fans everyday.
3) Blog. Blog on MySpace. Blog on FaceBook (notes / discussions). Blog on LinkedIn. Blog everywhere. Make sure that on each blog post you have a link back to your website.
4) Use Twitter. Build a network of followers that are interested in what you do or what you sell. Insert a link to your website every now and then within some of your spectacular and interesting tweets.
5) Ask people. This one is easy. Just open your mouth and ask people to come to your website. C’mon – you meet people everyday that are potential customers – give them a card and ask them to visit your site. Try to do several of these each day.
The above are just a few short suggestions that might help you generate some better traffic to your site – resulting in a few more customers. There are many strategies that do cost a little money but work very well – there are also many that cost money that simply don’t work. Be very careful. When you hear the letters SEO – be VERY VERY careful.

These are excellent suggestions! Just remember, you want the traffic (and the customers) to come to you! Naturally! Google rewards those who post information REGULARLY!
To Dennis’ last point of just letting people know about your website and asking them to take a look. Think of it like inviting people over to your house. If your house is dirty and unorganized, you are less likely to invite them. As such, let Social Media Dudes do a FREE review of your site. We will give you feedback and you are not at all obligated to use us after that.
Great ideas, thanks for sharing!
Ron…thanks for your feedback. What other ideas can we help folks like you out with?
